If you drive for a living or live on the road, the coverage that matters is not where a phone works standing still, but where it keeps working at speed between towns. The FCC collects exactly that: every carrier files a second map for a phone in a moving vehicle. On the filing as of December 31, 2025 it covers far less ground than the outdoor map, for all three.

By share of US area with 4G LTE in a moving car, AT&T reports 35.3%, Verizon reports 26.9% and T-Mobile reports 20.7%. Outdoors the order is Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.

In the car vs standing outdoors

Each carrier's in-car share against its outdoor share. The gap is the land where a phone that works at a rest stop may drop the call on the road.

In-car coverage in every state

Each carrier's in-car share of the state's area, and the in-car leader under the same water rule as the rest of the site. AT&T leads in 36, T-Mobile leads in 1 and Verizon leads in 1; 13 have no clear in-car leader.

Where the in-car leader is a different carrier

In 25 states the carrier that leads in a moving car is not the one that leads outdoors: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and West Virginia. If you drive there more than you stand still there, go by the in-car column.

Ranked by the best carrier's in-car share. In these states, even the strongest network files a moving-vehicle map over a minority of the land.

County by county

Of 3,083 counties where all three carriers file, AT&T leads in 2193, Verizon leads in 388 and T-Mobile leads in 136, and 366 have no clear leader. That is on the in-car map. In the 467 counties where coverage runs out, the in-car leads split AT&T 339, Verizon 46 and T-Mobile 13, with 69 too close to call.

What the in-car map does not cover

It is the carrier's own filing, not a drive test, and it is a share of area, not of road miles: a state's figure counts mountains and desert that no road crosses. It does not single out highways, truck stops or campgrounds. Check your regular routes on the state pages, and a stop you depend on with the FCC map's address search.
